The wayside shrine was originally erected in 1547 to commemorate the Nuremberg patrician sons Christian Pfinzing and Sebastian Schedel, who were shot at this spot by imperial mercenaries. The original was destroyed by US Army tanks during military exercises in 1962. In 2009, a replica made of quartzite was erected at the original location in the Sebalder Reichswald forest – near the intersection of Dormitzer Straße in the Tennenloher Forst forest. The shrine is called "Maulaufreißer" (literally "mouth opener"), presumably because of the distinctive shape of its head, which resembles a gaping mouth.
