Due to the very different site conditions and the varied relief, the Siegum forest is characterized by a high diversity of forest communities and offers a habitat for many, sometimes rare, animal and plant species. The undulating moraine plateau, furrowed by stream gorges and side valleys, is predominantly occupied by structurally rich beech forests. Alder and ash forests have settled along the stream valleys of the Königsau and Ringsbergerau, which meander across the plateau towards the Baltic Sea. In the transition to the Höftland, large areas of wet, swamp and alluvial forests spread out. The cliffs, which are up to 30 meters high, are mostly covered with slope forests rich in ash trees, and less frequently with ravine forests rich in fine hardwoods or slope beech forests. In addition to swamp forests, there are even small areas of acidic transitional moors or spring outlets with bittercress, black-leafed spleenwort and various types of moss. Many areas of the Siegum Forest have been managed as coppice forests for decades, primarily for firewood. Due to the small-scale ownership structure and partially extensive use, numerous near-natural forest biotopes have been preserved.

A truly beautiful landscape for hiking and relaxing. Look out of the forest onto the fjord and see Denmark. Very worthwhile.
