* With an estimated 5,000 steps, the Treppenviertel (Staircase District) lives up to its name. The stairs wind up and down the hillside, offering ever-changing perspectives. * The narrow, often cobblestone streets are lined with charming, individually designed houses. Here you'll find a mix of old fishermen's cottages, magnificent villas, and modern buildings. * The gardens and front yards are often lovingly tended and contribute to the Mediterranean atmosphere. * From many spots in the Treppenviertel (Staircase District), you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Elbe River and the passing ships.

Nice and flowy and great to ride

Blankenese, the village on the river – steep stairs, narrow alleys, a Danish Positano with allotment gardens and pretty houses in a very expensive location, crowned by the Süllberg with its castle complex, a gourmet restaurant and beer garden. Blankenese – a tourist attraction, a shining white mountain of cuteness with stubborn, proud native inhabitants. The former fishing village, first mentioned in documents in 1301, owes its name to its "blanke Neeße," a shining promontory that jutted out into the Elbe like a nose before a storm surge swept it away. Politically, Blankenese was also torn between. For more than two centuries, it belonged to Denmark, then to Austria for two years before Prussia expelled the Austrians and made the village part of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1919, the neighboring village of Dockenhuden was incorporated into the city. Eight years later, the larger Blankenese fell to Altona under protest and became a district of Hamburg in 1937.
