The parish village of Steinbach an der Haide lies sheltered in a depression on a high plateau in the Franconian Forest Nature Park. Steinbach an der Haide was probably founded around 1200 by Benedictine monks from Cella Abbey, now Probstzella. After frequent changes of ruler, Steinbach came into the possession of the knight Friedrich von Thüna. The communal village garden was first mentioned in the first half of the 16th century. It originated from an open space originally used as a cattle pen, and later for sowing and cultivating herbs. Today, flowers and fruits, grasses, and vegetables grow there. Almost every family in the village owns a plot in the garden. In the "Our Village Should Become More Beautiful" competition, it won a gold medal at the federal level in 1967 and 1975.
