The village of Castrop had market rights since 1484 - but no market place. The markets were held in various wider streets. When the Irishman William Thomas Mulvany built the Erin mine in 1866, Castrop's population increased rapidly, so that market activity expanded and the market place was created in its current form. The half-timbered house at Markt 4 dates back to the time before industrialization. The other farmers' houses had to make way for the first historicist development of the market place, of which only a few houses on the east side of the square remain today. During the redesign of the north and west sides of the square from 1908 to 1916, numerous houses were built in the reform style, a variant of Art Nouveau, such as Am Markt 24 and 25, and later the adjoining building in the brick expressionist style. The Münsterplatz bus station is also located near the Castrop-Rauxel Süd train station. From here you have good connections to public transport. Our favorite pizzeria, Prima Fila, is also just around the corner.

Erinpark In 1867, coal mining began in the Erin mine, founded by the Irishman William Thomas Mulvany, on the western outskirts of Castrop. The name Erin is a foreign name for Ireland. Shafts I and II were located on this site, and from 1891 onwards, a few kilometres further east, the hammerhead tower above the new shaft III, which still exists today, was built. In 1983, Erin mine was the last of five coal mines in the city to be closed down. From 1985 onwards, a combined recreational and commercial park was built on the site - Erin Park (often spelled »Erinpark«). This means that one part is a usable green area for local recreation and commercial businesses have been located in another part of the park. "Construction and opening of the line: On December 1, 1874, the 6.42-kilometer section from Herne via Börnig to Castrop (city) was opened for freight traffic by the Cologne-Minden Railway Company (CME). Passenger traffic did not begin until April 1, 1878. The Castrop-Rauxel South reception building: The station building was put into operation in 1886. It was a multi-part, two-story brick building in the classicist style on one side. The building consisted of a gable-fronted part of the building, which had an eaves-fronted extension. On the opposite side of the building, a one-story brick goods shed with side ramps had been added. The building sections had gable roofs, segmental arch windows and doors. Other line openings, extensions or changes •In 1891, the Castrop (city) station was renamed Castrop. •In 1911, the Royal Prussian State Railways (K.P.St.E.) built a mechanical signal box at the level crossing. •In 1962, the German Federal Railways (DB) renamed the station Castrop-Rauxel Süd. •In 1979, the DB took the signal box out of service and later demolished it. •On May 31, 1964, as part of the reconstruction work in the city area, the station was downgraded to a stopping point and the operating point was moved to the Münsterstraße level crossing. •In 2004, the reception building from 1886 was demolished. What has changed, what has remained: Like so many stations in the Ruhr area, Castrop-Rauxel Süd has also been downgraded more and more.
