9世紀から10世紀にかけて、ここには約18ヘクタールの集落（地名「Peeneberg」）がありました。これは、スラヴ人のルチツィ族/トルレンセル族の居住地域にあった、ヴァイキング時代の重要な交易拠点でした。 それはスラヴ人とヴァイキングの共同の居住地でした。ヴァイキングはここでバルト海沿岸および内陸（特に「Via regia」経由）と交易を行っていました。

The whole route is unique, you come very far out into the reed desert and are right in the middle of it. Most of the time you can't see far because you can't see over the reeds. The observation tower is great for that. There is also a dry place to rest here.

With around 20,000 hectares, the Peene river valley is one of the largest contiguous fen areas in Central and Western Europe. Here you can observe waterfowl up close.

A fantastic habitat for fauna and flora. Migratory bird flocks, in particular, benefit from the abundance of food during their regular migrations between their breeding grounds and winter quarters. Hopefully, this piece of nature will remain intact.
