10月 7, 2024, Malham Cove Limestone Pavement
Where the scene in Harry Potter was filmed where Harry and Hermione sat in the Deathly Hallows. Harry & Hermione set up camp in a tent on the Limestone Pavement at the top of Malham Cove, scenes from the film feature views across Malhamdale including the view to Cawden and down to Malham Village and Kirkby Malham. There is amazing views from this point over the scarred landscape. Malham Cove is a 70m (230ft) high curved crag of carboniferous limestone formed after the last ice age. Meltwater, particularly from Malham Tarn, cut back the cove as it fell over the edge as a waterfall. This erosion took place more actively at the lip of the fall, hence the curved shape. The cove was formed by glaciers that plucked rock from the cliff face and carried it away, and by meltwater that eroded the cliff face after the glaciers melted. The top of the cove is a limestone pavement with a distinctive pattern of limestone blocks called clints and fissures called grykes. The grykes have a more humid and warmer microclimate than the pavement, which supports different plant life. The top of the limestone has dry, stony conditions that support plants like Rock Rose and Thyme. Malham Cove once had a waterfall that was larger than Niagara Falls. The last time water flowed over the waterfall was in the 19th century, until extreme rain in 2015. Malham Cove is a short walk from the village of Malham, and is popular with rock climbers. Malham Cove has been featured in several films and TV shows, including Wuthering Heights, the previously mentioned Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and The Trip.

Malham Cove is a large curved limestone formation a short walk from the village of Malham. It was formed by a waterfall carrying meltwater from glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. Easy access to the cove from Malham and there are steps to the side of the cove which allow you to climb to the top. Careful very slippery at the top when on the limestone pavement in wet conditions.

The 70 metre (230ft) high, gently curving cliff of white limestone is a Yorkshire Dales gem. It has some unique and rare limestone formations at the top of the cliff. You may recognise scenes from Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows which featured the unique limestone pavement and views down to Malham Village and Kirkby Malham.

Specular limestone waterfall which is understandably popular and gets very busy. For the best experience, visit on a wet and blustery autumn or winter's day when not only will the waterfall be in full flow, but you might actually get to see it without all the 'wild swimming' instagrammers

At the top of the cove, you are treated to stunning views of the surrounding limestone pavement, green hills, and the impressive 260-foot high cliff face. The limestone pavement is a unique geological feature that formed over gazillion of years, and is now a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its rare plant and animal life. The top of Malham Cove was used as a filming location for the Harry Potter movie series. In Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part I, the characters Harry and Hermione set up camp on the Limestone Pavement at the top of Malham Cove, and the area was used for several other scenes in the movie. With its breathtaking vistas and natural splendor, the Top of Malham Cove is a must-see destination in the Yorkshire Dales.

11月 13, 2022, Ingleborough Summit
Lower than Whernside but higher than Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough at 723m is the third of the Yorkshire three peaks. It's a great summit, more defined than the long ridge of Whernside and with brilliant views in all directions. At a run, it's quite a climb from any direction, but never too steep (maybe?). The descent is amazing if you haven't wrecked your quads already.

There are amazing views from the summit of Ingleborough. If you're doing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks this is usually the last of the 3 and the ascent is a real slog up! It's definitely worth it though.

Arriving at a style gate, pass through and enter thick woodlands where you’ll be in earshot of Janet’s Foss — sounds guiding you to the final destination: a hidden waterfall and plunge pool hemmed in by trees that feels a million miles from the stress and strains of modern life.

Probably the best place in Yorkshire for a picnic, not least if you manage to miss the crowds that can be sizeable during peak times and the busy season.

Malham Cove, where the cliff face stretches up an impressive 260 feet. The very top is badly eroded, and geology fans will be interested to know the limestone pavement is of a particularly rare pattern for this part of England. Spend some time taking in the raw majesty from the foot of the rock, which was carved out over centuries as the glacier that once stood here melted. A great place for echoes and acoustics.

A very pretty walk, so many different views and then leading into a forest where the fall is. A lovely easy walk on its own.

GENERAL GEOLOGY Limestone pavements are glacially smoothed areas of flat, grey, limestone rock incised with deep fissures. They’re often found at the top of a cliff in the hillside (known as a ‘scar’). It’s a natural karst landscape where the exposed rock surface has been weathered by the slightly acidic rain to form fissures (grykes) and leaving standing blocks (clints) The pavements are usually in areas grazed by sheep but still manage to be botanically rich, although it might not seem like it at first glance! Have a look down in the grykes where the shelter provides a safe haven for some rarer plants such as ferns and saxifrage. Limestone pavements are synonymous with the Yorkshire Dales, and the southwestern area has the finest examples including: Malham Cove & Twistleton Scar.

An old waterfall caved out Malham cove and created the limestone pavement on top.

Perfect for a dip! Deep enough to dive into when the water level is high (we saw someone do it!)
