Well - one of my photos shows what it looked like here years ago: At first glance only a few stones, but authentic! Today: A brand new ruin! who likes it......

Today we visited the reconstructed castle. The reconstruction probably only affects the old keep, which was built a few meters thick with field stones. We would not have expected the castle itself to be here, but it is worth a short detour. Times must have been quite dangerous here back then, since some old castle ruins such as Cecilieninsel and the other castle ruins next to Cecilieninsel are also there. Incidentally, the way to the farm dog was blocked off, which means that it is no longer possible to get there. Next to the castle there are some ponds where fish was/is bred. If you want to enjoy the view, you can eat in the pond restaurant. But I don't know if this is still open at all, since there was no card on the house.

I discovered the place by chance. Since I like castles, I was very satisfied and I took some pictures. Unfortunately, I couldn't spend a lot of time here. But the environment looks very nice.

Kuddewörde, with the old Saxon name Kuthenworden, and Rotenbek were first mentioned in 1230 in the tithe register of the bishop in Ratzeburg. A keep of Duke Eric IV of Saxony-Lauenburg was destroyed in a dispute with the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Lübeck in 1420. Duke Johann IV of Saxony-Lauenburg founded a Wilhelmite monastery with a hospital in 1495. The Kuddewörde monastery existed until the Reformation, then until 1698 as a poor house. The buildings were demolished in 1780. The 15th century Kuddewörde Castle was demolished in 1585. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuddew%C3%B6rde

The castle complex is on the way to the Billequelle and is only a ruin. Unfortunately, the access had been closed for a long time due to extensive restorations and with it the way to the Billequelle - but now the way is currently free again. In the past, apart from the hill and a few stones, there was nothing to be seen of a castle - now attempts have been made to partially reconstruct the castle's round tower with large field stones. I am unable to judge whether this has really worked out well ... it now looks much too bright and new for an old castle - hopefully it will age a little over time. The only public path leads from the castle to the Billequelle. The small bridge there is still closed, but you can walk / push past it. The slab path that leads past the source ends in a dead end and back it leads over a private property, where a farm dog takes good care and "intruders" bark properly. So you have to go back past the old castle.

Linau Castle was a three-part medieval castle. On the middle hill, the main castle, there are remains of a round tower with 3 m thick walls. A castle "Linowe" was first mentioned in 1291. At that time the complex, known as the "robbers' nest", was owned by the aristocratic Scharffenberg family and was destroyed. Possibly it was the "Schlossberg" near Linau-Oberteich. After the rebuilding here at this point (1308) the Scharffenbergs left the castle in 1345, but recaptured it in 1346 and feuded the land again. Through an alliance of the Duke of Lauenburg, the Counts of Holstein and Schauenburg as well as Hamburg and Lübeck, they were finally expelled in 1349 after a three-week siege.

If you come from Kankelau, it goes beautifully downhill at high speed on this long and straight route and you can always see Wotersen Castle from a distance.

In the Billetal near Kuddewörde there are remains of a medieval castle ruin. Unfortunately, these are behind a paddock and are not accessible. But to imagine that there was medieval life on the small river is exciting.

"May makes everything new ..." only not the way to the Bille source. Unfortunately, the path across the farm is still barricaded. The mayor could have left that open. Pity!

From here you have a beautiful view across the landscaped park to the rear of Wotersen Manor. The landscaped park is not open to the public, so you have to look over the castle wall to see it. Wotersen Manor was owned for almost three centuries by the noble Bernstorff family, who played a significant role in Hanoverian and Danish politics during the 18th century. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gut_Wotersen

Wotersen Manor or Castle? The terms "manor house" and "castle" differ historically less in their inhabitants than in their function. Etymologically, both "castle" and "palace" are rooted in defense. The term "castle" has taken on a broader meaning since the Renaissance. A manor house, on the other hand, is always the center of an estate, such as a knight's estate or—in Schleswig-Holstein—a noble estate. Both are legal terms, as they historically presuppose a legal status, namely the estate owner's membership in the locally organized knighthood, which was represented in the state parliament. In any case, a manor house was the center of an agricultural operation, an estate, or at least a farm with arable land, or a vineyard, forest estate, or fish farm. You can find more detailed information about the different terms here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_(Architektur)

Obviously, even the extension of the work until June 2019 was not enough. Also in September 2019, the blocking continued. Too bad that the way to Billequelle is also blocked.

The series "Das Erbe der Guldenburgs" was broadcast on ZDF at the end of the 80s and was the German answer to "Dallas" and "Denver-Clan". Everything revolves around the life of the noble family of Guldenburg. The main roles include Karl-Heinz Vosgerau as head of the family Martin Graf von Guldenburg, Christine Hörbiger as Christine Countess of Guldenburg, Iris Berben as Evelyn Lauritzen and Ruth Maria Kubitschek as Margot Balbeck. The production mainly takes place in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. The filming location for Schloss Guldenburg was the Wotersen estate in Roseburg in the Herzogtum Lauenburg district of Schleswig-Holstein, east of Hamburg. The interior shots, however, were taken on Gut Hasselburg in Altenkrempe. The pictures of the castle of Hertha von Guldenburg were shot in the castle Kulpin near Ratzeburg. The former St. Pauli brewery served as the backdrop for the fictitious Balbeck brewery competing with the Guldenburg and for a while marketed a beer under the name "Balbeck Pilsener", whose label closely resembled the "Astra" brand. The brewery buildings were demolished after the acquisition by Holsten and replaced by a modern building complex with offices and a hotel. The tower in which Balbecks had her office, however, has been rebuilt in a new form. The exterior shots of the residential building of Margot Balbeck were made on the site of today's villa by Dieter Bohlen in Tötensen. https://www.filmtourismus.de/das-erbe-der-guldenburgs/

The estate is located in the municipality of Roseburg in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg in southeastern Schleswig-Holstein. Nestled in the gentle landscape of Schleswig-Holstein, Wotersen Castle seems like a silent greeting from another era. The bright yellow manor house, surrounded by ancient trees and manicured meadows, exudes a serene elegance. It became famous not only for its long history but also as a filming location for the TV series "Die Guldenburgs." Although the castle itself is not open to the public, a hike in the surrounding area is well worth the effort: Well-maintained paths lead through fields, small woodlands, and past idyllic streams. The ensemble unfolds its full charm, especially in the morning or evening light – a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates historic architecture in a natural setting. https://castlewelt.com/data/location/schloss-wotersen/
