The following article inspired me to search for Lanken Castle today: The former Lanken Castle was not located at the current Lanken estate, but almost a quarter of a mile southeast of the farm near the highway between the Dreweskamp paddock and the Ellernholz surcharge in a meadow, where the old castle site can still be found today, an 8-foot-high, bushy, round hill about 50 feet in diameter, surrounded by the remains of a moat. In the moat, a hewn beam, a horse's tooth and many fragments of bricks were found during a subsequent excavation, and in the surrounding area, in addition to a lot of rubble, a large number of palisades, one of which contained a four-inch lead cross, and a brass bowl. To the northwest of the hill, a double stone pavement was found, one on top of the other. In 1349, this castle, at that time a robber's castle, was destroyed by the Lübeckers in conjunction with Duke Eric of Saxony and Count John the Mild of Holstein; it was rebuilt, but completely collapsed in the 16th century (see above). In the Ratzeburg tithe register (around 1230), Lanken does not appear anywhere. According to legend, a spring near Lanken was once a health spring visited by strangers; at least at present, however, this spring does not contain any medicinal additives. The historic garden complex “Juliusburg” is a landscape-defining testimony to the modern era, which is significant in the region's history. In the center of the garden complex is the medieval tower hill castle “Insulbarg”, whose tower hill was the starting point for the garden design and marks the actual archaeological monument. The earth, rampart and moat systems are rich soil archives of high scientific value that are worth preserving and protecting. The topographical location of the tower hill castle in a lowland was chosen based on fortification-favorable aspects. The garden was created in the 17th century by Duke Julius Heinrich of Lauenburg as a pleasure garden, who had a summer residence here. The tower hill castle and the outer bailey were incorporated into the garden. At the beginning of the 18th century the garden was abandoned, so that it can only be recognized by the relief and the ditches running through the area. The castle's good preservation and its integration into the surrounding lowland landscape make it easy to experience the monument. The naming shows that the monument is anchored in local traditions. The protection of the cultural monument of significant local importance is in the public interest because of its special historical, scientific and cultural landscape-defining value. https://www.schleswig-holstein.de/DE/landesregierung/ministerien-behoerden/ALSH/Service/Denkmallisten/Denkmallisten_node.html?lang=de

Interesting building. Unfortunately it cannot be visited and you can only see it over the castle wall.

Well hidden and ingrown, it is better not to disturb you!

I discovered the place by chance. Since I like castles, I was very satisfied and I took some pictures. Unfortunately, I couldn't spend a lot of time here. But the environment looks very nice.
