The only picnic table for miles around and really worth a (food) break.

Old fruit varieties are not only a valuable cultural asset, but also important for biodiversity, as they are often more resistant to diseases and climate change. They also provide habitat and food for many insect species.

The Aukrug Nature Park Association has planted another 30 fruit trees in 2022. This time on the hiking trail next to the Kiesgruben Lake. The path is fantastic, not only when the fruit is in bloom or ripe - it offers hikers a beautiful view to the east over the lake, which is also the winter quarters of the rare Bewick's swans.

Here, at a picnic bench, the hiking trail passes a small, artificially dammed pond, the Herrmann-Länge-Teich. A nice moment for a break.

The pleasant walk around the sports field pond is 300 m long. There are many benches for a picnic on the banks. The embankment is unsecured on all sides. I find that exciting and dog-friendly. Swimming and fishing are prohibited.

The ponds were formerly created as fish ponds in order to become more independent from the meat economy.
