A very well-preserved castle, partly inhabited and partly open to visitors, it is definitely worth a stop.

The Castello di Avio, also known as Castello di Sabbionara (in older German texts as "Schloss Aue"), dates back in part to the 11th century and is one of the oldest fortifications in Trentino. It is located above the Vallagarina (German: Lagertal) in the municipality of Avio (district of Sabbionara d'Avio). The Avio Castle is made up of a large complex that includes the 11th century keep, five towers, the baronial palace and the 13th century walls. Avio castle is among the best known and oldest fortified monuments in Trentino. It is located in the hamlet of Sabbionara and thanks to its imposing keep it dominates the Vallagarina.

TASK: The upper works served partly as accommodation for the troops and partly as a sentry post to monitor the access routes. The lower, smaller work, also intended as a defensive building, functioned as a roadblock with its gateway. ARMAMENTS: In 1861 the upper works were armed with six 10 cm guns, four 12 cm guns and one 15 cm gun. In the lower work, on the other hand, there were two 10 cm cannons. The work was supported by the Sagron battery (1880/81), which was located on the foothills of Monte Baldo, in a dominant position over the actual work, and was demolished in 1900. In 1914 the factory was dismantled and the cannons were positioned on the lake shore in the park of the Hartungen sanatorium.
