The Paul and Paula Ufer on Rummelsburger Bay is simply a great place for a short kayak or pedal boat tour. The mix of water, big city and small escapes is irresistible. You can find further information and opening times here: http://ahoi-ostkreuz.de/.

The Rummelsburger Bucht, also known as Rummelsburger See, is one of the quieter corners of Berlin, far away from the hustle and bustle but still pulsating with life. The bay stretches along the districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Lichtenberg and forms an idyllic place for those looking for peace and nature in the big city. While the hustle and bustle of the city is more noticeable on the Treptower Park side, Rummelsburger Bucht offers a quieter experience. The riverside path invites you to take a relaxing hike, with an impressive panorama of the water and the city horizon. A visit to the harbor kitchen with its maritime charm or a sporty excursion to the “Ostbloc” bouldering hall round off the experience. Many Berliners are drawn to this picturesque place, especially on weekends. Families, walkers and ambitious cyclists enliven the path. With a little consideration for each other, a harmonious coexistence is created here, where everyone can enjoy the beauty of the surroundings in their own way. A special highlight of the bay are the two small islands of Kratzbruch and Liebesinsel, which are protected areas. A sign of how valuable and worth protecting this little paradise in the middle of the big city is. For everyone who wants to have a view of Rummelsburg Bay from home, I made this video: https://youtu.be/mJhMiPTL3Mg

For around 140 years, there were institutions on this site that were used for state persecution and repression. For decades, the building complex was used as a workhouse. Many of those interned here became victims of Nazi crimes. Most recently, during the SED regime, the name "Rummelsburg" stood for a men's prison notorious for political imprisonment. >> City Workhouse << 1879 - 1933 >> Work and Conservation House << 1933 - 1945 >> Work and Conservation House << 1945 - 1951 >> Penitentiary Berlin I << 1951 - 1990 You can learn more about the history of the individual periods on the information steles on site. At the end of October 1990, the Rummelsburg prison was closed and after a long time Vacant as of 2007 developed into a residential complex.

At the Rummelsburger Bucht you can walk and hike very nicely on the riverside path. On weekends and when the weather is nice, it gets crowded and cyclists with sporty ambitions don't like to brake for people who just run. With a little consideration from everyone, it works very well. And the view is really nice!
