The "Hohner See" nature reserve was designated in 1995 with a total area of 364 hectares. The Hohner Lake itself is about 70 hectares and has a depth of 1.00 to 1.50 meters. It is the last remaining flat lake on the edge of the formerly extensive floodplains of the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape. With the adjacent high moors "Königsmoor" and "Hartshoper Moor", the area still gives an idea of the once endless moor and swamp landscape.

The moor is quite bushy and so the view is a little lacking. That only changes at the Moorkuhle. Here the view goes over the water with the dead birch trees and the typical bulges caused by the accumulation of peat.
