3月 12, 2024, Penrose Estate
A lovely National Trust property, with a fantastic walk through the estate leading to the sea.

There is a ferry from the harbor to the Scilly Islands, which are a must-see. Otherwise there is a nice promenade.

For me, St. Ives is one of the most idyllic places on Cornwall's coast. Here you will not only find shops, pubs and nice cafés, but also many small art galleries.

On Saturday mornings Penrose becomes the site of West Cornwall's Parkrun with around 200 runners taking on the 5km course each week. The running route follows the old Victorian roadway through woodland and parkland with views of Loe Pool and beyond. It is very busy at that time.

A great place that is occasionally admired in Rosamunde Pilcher films.

Mousehole (Cornish: Porthenys) is a village and fishing port in Cornwall. It is about 4 km south of Penzance on the shore of Mount's Bay. An islet called St Clement's Isle lies about 350m offshore from the harbor entrance.

This barometer was originally loaned to Mousehole by Admiral Fitzroy, the founder of the Meteorological Institute. The intention was to provide data to the institute to improve weather forecasting and storm forecasting. But also to warn the fishermen of impending bad weather in an effort to reduce the loss of life. In 2009, the Meteorological Institute donated the barometer to Mousehole Port Authority.

The harbor of Mousehole is very pleasant to walk along. A nice break from a bike ride.

Pronounced Mou-zall (as in the start of mouse and hall with a z), this is a picture perfect harbour village. The narrow streets hide cafes, shops and galleries while the view across the harbour is stunning. Dylan Thomas described the village as the loveliest in England, but to many people from Cornwall, this isn't England so it just isn't true.

Nice place to rest on the Seafront with a love cafe opposite some outdoor seating.

St Ives should be avoided during English school holidays - unless you like crowded Mallorca. Unfortunately, it wasn't tranquil there. But the walk around St Ives towards Zennor is gorgeous.

Okay for a quick visit on foot or even bicycle but I do not recommend taking a car there as there is nowhere to park and the streets are extremely narrow. I’m afraid this is a total tourist trap the same way that Saint Ives is. I would avoid it.

Pronounced Mow-zall (as in cow and hall), this pretty harbour is unsurprisingly used frequently as a filming location. The village itself is tiny but full of life and there are cafes if you need a pit stop. In December 1981 the village was devastated by the loss of the Penlee Lifeboat, the Solomon Browne, which went out in treacherous seas to rescue the Union Star. Without power, the coaster was being swept towards the rugged and dangerous coastline. The entire lifeboat crew of eight were lost in the rescue attempt. Everyone in the village lost someone and it's impact is still felt today.

Lovely town, lots of places to eat and drink. Can feel a little crowded sometimes. We have eaten at the Cellar Bistro and the Firehouse Bar and Grill (both on Fore Street) and I can recommend both of them for some great food. The latter has a gin bar too.
