The weir is located on the Erft River in Grevenbroich-Kapellen and is part of the "An der schwarzen Brücke" nature reserve. It divides the river into a main channel and a side channel (Mühlenerft), thus ensuring a regulated water level. The weir has been renovated in recent years to restore its function and safeguard the water flow. It is an important component of the nature reserve because it diverts a portion of the Erft into oxbow lakes, which are crucial for nature conservation.
