The town of Lychen was founded as early as 1248. Lychen has a Baroque town hall on the market square, originally built on an older town hall site. Throughout its history, it has experienced several fires: in 1633, a fire caused great devastation, and in 1732, the town hall burned down again to its foundations. In 1748, it was rebuilt as a two-story, Baroque plastered building with a tower and mansard roof. In 1817, the town hall received a clock. In 1945, it partially burned down again. The final reconstruction took place in 1956/57, but without the tower and clock for cost reasons.
