The Cross Canal in Schwerin Palace Gardens is one of the most impressive design elements of the historic park surrounding Schwerin Palace. It was created in the 18th century as part of the Baroque redesign of the palace gardens and reflects the spirit of that era, in which symmetry, perspective, and the connection between architecture and nature played a central role. The canal gets its name from its cruciform shape: two straight watercourses intersect at right angles, forming a geometric center that blends harmoniously into the overall composition of the garden. Charming vistas open up from the banks of the Cross Canal – on the one hand, to the magnificent Schwerin Palace, and on the other, to the expansive garden areas, avenues, and vistas that extend in all directions. Today, the Kreuzkanal (Cross Canal) is one of the most popular spots in Schwerin Palace Gardens.
