9月 6, 2025, Freyburger Schweigenberg Vineyards
The Freyburg Schweigenberg is probably the most famous terraced vineyard in the region: the approximately 25-hectare area is divided into five to ten terraces, one above the other, and into numerous small and tiny plots – a true cultural monument for this traditional form of cultivation.

The geotrail isn't just interesting from a geological perspective. I was particularly fascinated by the many orchids and the fantastic view of the landscape.

Limestone was quarried here, as evidenced by the steep cliffs. The material was then burned on site to produce lime.

4月 22, 2025, St. Mary's Town Church, Freyburg
The construction of this late Romanesque church, also known as the "sister of Naumburg Cathedral," dates back to the period between 1210 and 1230. It was probably commissioned by the Thuringian Landgrave Ludwig IV (reigned from 1217 to 1227). The church's core is Romanesque. At the beginning of the 15th century, the apse was demolished and replaced by a Gothic choir. The southern side apse was sacrificed to an added sacristy. At the end of the 15th century, the nave was demolished and replaced by a hall nave.

The Memorial Gymnastics Hall is dedicated to the memory of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778 to 1852). In the early 1890s, the idea arose to erect a representative memorial with an adjoining gymnasium over Jahn's grave, which contains his bronze bust, which Johannes Schilling had created in 1858. Construction began in late summer 1893 according to plans by Leipzig architect Georg Weidenbach, and the inauguration took place on June 10, 1894, in the presence of 3,000 gymnasts from all over Germany. The Jahn Museum was initially located in the space behind the Schilling bust, but due to lack of space, it was relocated to the adjacent new Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Hall of Honor in 1903. In 1936, Jahn's remains were reburied from the Memorial Gymnastics Hall in the crypt on the grounds of the Jahn House. To this day, the memorial gymnasium is used by Freyburg's schools and clubs. In 1994, the gymnasium was renovated and completed with the addition of an underground sanitary wing.

The Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Hall of Honor, originally built as a museum for the father of gymnastics, now serves as a venue for festive events and academic conferences. It is also the venue for the general meetings of the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Society. In 1894, the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Hall of Honor, which also included a museum room, was opened in the immediate vicinity. This soon proved too small. At the initiative of Ferdinand Goetz, a Leipzig physician and chairman of the German Gymnastics Association, Leipzig architects Georg Weidenbach and Richard Tschammer presented plans for a museum building in 1899. The German Gymnastics Association raised funds for the construction among its members. The museum building was inaugurated in 1903. On the occasion of the 1936 Olympic Games, the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Museum was established in Jahn's former home, and the previous museum building was renamed the Hall of Honor.

4月 22, 2025, Dicker Wilhelm, Neuenburg Castle
The "Fat William" has only been called that since the 20th century. The only surviving of the original three keep towers was probably built starting in 1150. Its diameter is 14 meters; in the Romanesque period, it was at least 23 meters high. Due to its interior, it is more likely to be considered a residential tower than a pure keep. It is highly likely that the tower served as the seat of the Burgraves of Neuenburg from the House of Meinheringen in the 13th century, who are documented as "Praefectus de Nuenburg, Burggravius de novo castro" from 1215 to 1297.

4月 22, 2025, Neuenburg Castle (Freyburg)
The hilltop castle complex of Neuenburg Castle, located on the Romanesque Road, was once the largest castle of the Landgraves of Thuringia. Its construction, under the direction of Count Ludwig von Schauenburg of Ludowingen, known as Ludwig the Springer (1042 to 1123), began around 1090 with the first circular walls, which still stand today up to a height of eight meters in the inner castle. Over the next hundred years, the castle was reinforced and expanded in several stages. From around 1400, the castle underwent extensive rebuilding in the Gothic style, and large parts of the Romanesque structure were lost. After losing its military importance, the castle was converted into a hunting lodge for the Dukes of Saxe-Weissenfels, for which purpose a zoo and pleasure garden were created in the forest to the east. Today, Neuenburg Castle is managed by the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation.

4月 22, 2025, View of Neuenburg Castle
Across the Eselsgraben, you can see Neuenburg Castle. However, due to the dense vegetation on this slope, the view is never truly unobstructed. Nevertheless, you can still get a good idea of the size of the mighty castle complex.

4月 22, 2025, View of the Unstrut Valley
From the narrow hiking trail along the southern slope of the Ehrauberge to the Eselsgraben, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Unstrut Valley. The river, which flows primarily from west to east, has carved deep into the rock here, carving steep, south-facing slopes out of the mountains that receive plenty of sun. Ideal for viticulture.

1月 3, 2025, View of Freyburg and Vineyards
The view of Freyburg with the vineyard in the foreground is simply fantastic. Next door is the Hotel and Gasthaus Edelacker where you can eat very well. There is also a car park there and the castle is only a few metres away.
