Shenandoah National Park is an enchanting gateway to the natural wonders and tranquility that await you there.

Beautiful scenic route. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to explore the trails and only made a quick visit.

Compton Gap Trailhead is actually situated at Compton Gap and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The views from Compton Gap are great, but if you decide to hike up to Compton Peak, you are in for an even greater treat.

Shawl Gap is on the ridge of the mountain range that crosses George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, connecting Buzzard Rock to High Peak. The gap is accessible by different trails, and is a strategic point that connects Shawl Gap Trail, Tuscarora-Massanutten Trail and Buzzard Rock Trail.

A short hike via Buzzard Rock Trail takes you to this vertical rock formation, with panoramic views of Fort Valley and the National Forest. The second part of the trail is rock so it’s recommended to go with shoes with good traction and support. The parking lot can be busy on weekends, it’s better to get there early.

Compton Peak is found on a short detour off the Appalachian Trail, via the Compton Peak West Trail, only a few hundred feet up. There is a great clearing and lookout point, and it is worth the detour for hikers to peek out of the green tunnel over the trees. For day hikers, it is a 2.4-mile round-trip hike from the nearest trailhead, with an elevation gain of 800 feet. It is recommended to bring a reward snack to eat here while overlooking the Shenandoah Mountains.

Great spot on the river to launch a kayak but no parking and good roads to get there.
