After the Sundsvall fire of 1888, the city's reconstruction was the subject of much debate. Officials eventually agreed to largely preserve the existing city plan, rather than transforming it into a network of wide fire lanes. However, all buildings were to be constructed of stone (hence the name Stenstaden, or Stone City), and a wide promenade, serving as a fire lane, was to be built through the city center. The use of stone for all city buildings meant that many who had lost their homes in the fire could not afford to rebuild. Despite immediate aid from across Europe, only the city's wealthy timber barons could finance the new stone structures.

Together with Stora Torget on the other side of the Esplanade, Vängåvan Park forms a large green space and the heart of Sundsvall. The park, with its fountain built at the end of the 19th century, was one of the first publicly designed spaces in Sweden. During Sundsvall's rapid economic growth, the area around Vängåvan, with its several banks, became one of Sweden's most important financial centers. It is one of the most beautiful national parks, but the rocky sections are very challenging and not suitable for children under 10 years old. We also had to carry our little dog for a few short stretches. So please remember to wear proper footwear and bring plenty of water to drink. Our dog always had plenty of opportunities to drink natural water. A must for active hikers 🤩😍👍💕.

Passage through the Slåttdalsskrevan is prohibeted due to danger of falling rocks. There is a nice way arround it and you also have a good view on it.

Very tough and steep climb of enormous boulders that require both hands. But once at the top, the amazing view of the Baltic Sea and the islets immediately makes you forget the effort.

Big stuga (8 beds with matrasses) and several places to pitch a tent. There were around 8 tents when we slept there. Drinking water can be found a few hundred meters furter up North.

Difficult but very nice climb. There are a few streams like this one to get some fresh drinking water.

One of the most beautiful spots on the trail. The small stuga can cater for 4 people max. There really was no room for us to put a tent, the very few flat spaces were all very soggy because of the rain the day before. We had to continue the hike to put our tent 3km further on the beach.

Everything you need is available. Water (a little further), toilet, many beds and a heater. We were there with 6 other people during a thunderstorm.

The path through the gorge is now closed (June 2023). But there is a new path above the gorge, which is well developed (ladders, safety ropes) and offers many panoramic views.
