Actually, the canal is a listed building.

The basic processes serve both to dry out individual canal sections for maintenance work and to regulate the water level during normal operation.

Bottom outlets are used to regulate water levels, particularly to drain excess sewer water. This water is then fed into nearby bodies of water. See information panel for further information.

The Wolfstein castle ruins date back to the 12th century and are located above Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate. A trip there is always worthwhile, and the castle ruins are about 3 km from the old canal and are a popular stop on hikes.
