During WWII, this site was the site of the airfield, occupied by German troops from 1941 to 1944, from where Typhoons took off to fight for our freedom. Now a memorial.

The rather imposing field cross marks the intersection of the parishes of Oostwinkel, Ursel, and Zomergem, as they were demarcated in the 13th century. The cross's history dates back to the 13th century, when the first attempt was made to transform the natural landscape into a cultivated landscape. This was a very uncertain period, marked by, among other things, turbulent religious wars. It wasn't until around 1500, when many farms lay in ruins, that the transition from field to woodland was restored. The avenues, laid out in a checkerboard pattern, are still clearly recognizable today. (Source: Lievegem.be) Diagonally opposite the cross is an entrance to the small but very charming Berhoutbosje woods.

The (historical) Scheepsput can be found in the beautiful green Sint-Pietersveld. You would hardly believe it, but this well was dug in the mid-19th century to build a three-master. The large sailing ship served as a training ground for the sailors of a reform school in the area (now Community Institution De Zande). The pond was given the name 'Het Schip', but was transformed by the local population into the Scheepsput.

The canal with many names: officially it is called the ‘Afleidingskanaal van de Leie’, it is often called the ‘Schipdonkkanaal’ or ‘Kanaal van Schipdonk’ and in common parlance people sometimes dare to speak of the ‘Stinker’. The latter name refers to the heavily polluted water in the canal as a result of flax retting in the Leie. It was precisely because of that polluted water that a siphon was built to prevent dirty water from flowing into the Ghent-Bruges canal. The ‘Goed van Schipdonck’ near this intersection is said to have given the canal its name. Source: https://www.lievegem.be/lievelingsplekjes/schipdonkkanaal

The canal meanders through the Belgian countryside and offers beautiful views of the surrounding polders and fields. The cycle path along the canal is well maintained and often far removed from busy roads, making it perfect for a relaxing cycle ride.

The Keigatbos is an atmospheric and varied nature reserve, where deciduous trees, open fields and winding paths alternate. This forest in the Flemish Ardennes offers numerous hiking trails along old pollard willows and rustic wooden fences, with here and there an open space full of wild flowers.

In the north of Ursel, near the Keigatbossen, there is a so-called field cross. The cross is surrounded by lime trees. The field cross at this location is said to date back to the middle of the 13th century. At that time, Bishop Walter de Marvis demarcated the parish boundaries in this region. Today, the area around the field cross is a pleasant resting place in the Drongengoed Landscape Park; in the past, it was a rest and landmark for travellers.
