A beautiful path along the border - there's also a bench for resting.

A beautiful, wide pedestrian and cycle path, bordered by pollarded willows like an avenue, and a separate bridleway, also designed as a willow avenue. The pedestrian and cycle path is easily usable even in bad weather, as it is paved and covered with gravel. The bridleway, on the other hand, is a natural, grassy path. NAME: I can only guess why it's called "van Bonpad." The surname "van Bon" appears frequently in historical documents in the Bergen/Gendringen region. Whether this path belonged to the van Bon farm or led to it, I don't know. Perhaps a local could help me with that? What certainly fits is that the path is very beautiful and idyllic. And "bon" means good in French.

Sheep dike

The name Landfort refers to a ford (a place fordable) in the Oude IJssel river. Landfort Manor was first mentioned in 1434. Since then, the size of the estate and the exterior of the buildings have changed regularly. When the Amsterdam ophthalmologist and botanist Johann Albert Luyken (1785-1867) acquired Landfort Manor in 1823, he had ambitious renovation plans. In 1825, he commissioned the renowned landscape architect Jan David Zocher Jr. (1791-1870) to design a landscaped park. The manor house itself was also redesigned, according to a plan by the Anholt court architect Johann Theodor Übbing (1786-1864), which included curved wings. J.T. Übbing also designed the oriental-style dovecote. Landfort Manor was severely damaged in 1945. In 1970, "Stichting Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen" acquired the external site. In 2017, "Stichting Erfgoed Landfort" took over the island and the surrounding land on a long-term leasehold basis.

The island with its small country estate is called "Het Kleine Erf" (Little Erf). Today, several old and remarkable trees from that era still stand on the island. There are winding paths, embankments, flowerbeds, flowering shrubs, and numerous surprising vistas. Het Kleine Erf is accessible via two distinctive bridges. One is the cast-iron bridge from 1873. This bridge was built at the Isselburg Ironworks in Germany and was restored in 2019 by order of the "Stichting Erfgoed Landfort" (Landfort Heritage Foundation). The monumental bridge at the head of Het Kleine Erf dates from the early 20th century and was designed by a member of the Luyken family.

The Brüggenhütte is a popular meeting place and a popular destination with a lovely beer garden. It is located directly on the Aa River and on the border with Dinxperlo, Netherlands. The hotel is open daily, the restaurant only on weekends or by appointment. Restaurant: Opening hours Fri + Sat 5 pm - 11 pm and Sun 10 am - 11 pm. HISTORY: From the mid-18th century, a customs post was located at this site at the Aa Dam. All iron ore deliveries outside of the "Herrlichkeit Anholt" (Herrlichkeit Anholt), for example, to the Liedern St. Michaelis Ironworks, as well as the return deliveries of pig iron, were subject to customs clearance. The so-called bog iron ore was found in large quantities in the fields in our area as rocks. This was the era of foundries, including the Isselburger Ironworks (around 1794).
