The Kommiezenpad consists of four different loops near Winterswijk. You can hike or cycle through the border region and learn all about the area's nature and history. In the past, this area was primarily used for smuggling illegal products across the border, and the trails follow the old smuggling routes. Border stone 788, known as the "St. Vitus Stone," marks the point where the municipalities of Winterswijk (Netherlands), Südlohn, Vreden, and historically also Stadtlohn (Germany) meet.

What is advertised in the Open Street Map as the "Devil's Gorge" actually turned out to be a really varied forest path with ups and downs. I didn't get a real gorge feeling, but that didn't detract from the special charm of this path. It started today with the first section of the path being closed (why?). According to a local, it had been closed for some time, so an alternative, well-trodden path of the finest quality offers an equally good alternative, which flows into the Berkel at the other end of the Devil's Gorge. The following path along the Berkel - also known as the "Devil's Gorge" is more of a beautiful little "high bank path" that offers fantastic views down onto the Berkel, which flows murmuringly much deeper down.

Unfortunately, the path to the Devil's Gorge was closed due to subsidence on the embankments. We had to turn around and take another path. 🫠

The Farmhouse Museum is a collection of twelve buildings in the town park of Vreden. The buildings of the open-air museum are officially referred to as the "historic West Münsterland farm complex". The original locations of the buildings were in the surrounding area. The area is right on the Berkel with the Schleusen waterfall. If you are in the immediate vicinity, it is definitely worth a visit.
