The Wöstenesch watermill was the only one of three watermills on the Eggermühlenbach that was preserved and revived by the local community. It bears witness to the long tradition of water mills in this area. The Wöstenesch water mill, which belongs to the village of Eggermühlen, is embedded in an old cultural landscape on the edge of the extensive Maiburg forest area. It was the only one of three mills that were originally located on the Eggermühlenbach stream that was preserved. The first documented mention in the archives of the Westphalian noble seat of Darfeld dates back to 1594, when the mill, built by the Cistercian nuns of the Börstel monastery, changed hands for the first time.

At its end, Schwedenstraße meets the former eastern cross street, the street “An den Schanzen”. The current name is reminiscent of an earth bastion that was located here until 1734, the Rinken or Kemnaschanze (Kemnade), named after the residents of the house directly on the ski jump. The large earth wall with a wide city moat secured the southeast side of the city. Even during the 30 Years' War, the entrenchment was a strong defensive bulwark.

The castle was built in the 14th century by Electoral Mainz to protect the neighboring Steinbach monastery and the surrounding estates against the Electoral Palatinate. The process can be seen as a dispute between the archdiocese and the Palatinate as a result of the transfer of the Lorsch monastery to Electorate of Mainz in 1232. The construction on fiefdom of the Erbach taverns, which were fiefdoms of the Count Palatine, led to complications that were initially resolved by granting a castle fiefdom and later by pledging it to Erbach. The earliest mention of the castle comes from the year 1310. In 1317 Schenk Eberhard VI. von Erbach called Mainzer Burgmann. After the castle was initially given to Erbach as a Mainz fiefdom, the taverns acquired Fürstenau in 1355 and finally in 1454. Until then, a Mainz bailiff had still resided in the castle.

The history of the small town of Ankum goes back a long way. It was first mentioned in a document in 977, then under the name Ainghem. Mainly cloth was traded locally, as well as livestock to this day. The Artland Cathedral towers proudly in the historic town center. Right next door you will find cozy cafés and restaurants that invite you to linger.

Here you have to push the wheel down and up again. If you take this point with you on the tour, you should make sure that you don't load the bike too heavily. the ascent is difficult, and the stairs are built in such a way that you cannot push your bike up if you use the steps. Very challenging!

Artland Cathedral Roman Catholic parish church in Ankum, Lower Saxony The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas, popularly known as Artländer Cathedral, is the landmark of Ankum, an old market town where cloth was once traded. The church, consecrated to St. Nicholas, is located on the Vogelberg, high above the market arches. The church tower is 79.3 m high and rests on a three-story substructure that was built in 1514 on the old church, which was probably built before 1100. The old Ankum cross, which was built around 1280, is kept in the church. The current church was built after the fire in the old parish church in 1892 over a four-year construction period starting in 1896 and was inaugurated in 1900. Berlin sculptor Paul Brandenburg created the altar table, tabernacle, ambo (lectern) and other details such as the door handles.

The Wöstenesch water mill was the only one of the three mills that could be preserved for posterity. The Prues family leased this "upper Egger mill" for several generations. In 1970, the last miller of that era, Walter Prues, gave up his job due to lack of profitability. The cultural monument owes its good condition today to the local history and tourism association, whose main goal when it was founded in 1975 was to preserve the structure of the rather dilapidated mill building. When more than 100 friends of the homeland decided to breathe life back into the old walls, it was a last-minute rescue (see: https://xn--heimatverein-eggermhlen-upc.com/woestenesch-wassermuehle ) The facility is very well maintained, there is seating and information about the mill is also available. A perfect place to take a break 👍

Today you don't see much of it anymore, but the castle complex stands in the middle of an old moor area. Sand was piled up in a fen, moats were built on the outside and everything was supported with walls. That is why Fürstenau Castle looks like a moated castle today. Today part of the palace houses the administration of the joint municipality of Fürstenau. You can still visit the site and, above all, look at the great park.
