The lake is located west of Dargun in the Mecklenburg region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It was probably created in the 14th century by the monks of Dargun Monastery.

The monastery lake of Dargun is about 180 m wide, 1350 m long and about 3-4 m deep. You can walk around it in about 1.5 hours. The lake was created by the monks of the monastery in the 14th century with the help of a dam. It was used for fishing and to operate a water mill.
