Beautiful mountain village, only accessible via winding roads and quite isolated. Great location directly below a large mountain range with many hiking opportunities.

Pefki is a pretty hilltop village easily accessible from Makry-Gialos by good road or on foot via the scenic Pefki Gorge. Many houses have been renovated and the residents put a lot of effort into beautiful potted plants. To stop off, there is the kafenion "Weinlaube" (the landlord speaks German, among other things) and the tavern Piperia.

In contrast to other mountain villages, there is still some village life here. Several houses have been renovated and the residents decorate their village with numerous potted plants. Too early in the year there could still be too much water in the gorge. In May 2022 it worked. Later in the year there is no water guarantee.

Well, you do not necessarily have to climb. All that matters is to climb (or descend) two well-installed metal stairs. Alternatively, there is also the possibility to get to know the gorge along the west side with a different perspective. The way is unproblematic!

There are certainly more impressive gorges in Crete, but the Péfki Gorge is simply beautiful in its entirety.
