The moated castle is the landmark of Mitwitz and an absolute highlight. A visit to the castle surrounded by water with its many original furnishings from the 16th to 20th centuries is very worthwhile.

The former moated castle, with its almost square floor plan measuring approximately 70 by 60 meters, is built on 190 cm thick outer foundation and ground floor walls and consists of a total of five floors. Two round towers rise at the northern corners of the building, their conical roofs slightly projecting above the hipped roof of the main building, thus lending the property a defensive character. Untersiemau Moated Castle stands in a park on the southern edge of the Upper Franconian municipality of Untersiemau in the Coburg district. The oldest parts of the building, also known as the Lower Castle, date back to the 13th century. The castle was expanded and rebuilt several times over the following centuries. In any case, it's a huge building. More defiant than beautiful.

The four corners of the castle are aligned exactly in the four cardinal directions, otherwise the building is rather irregularly designed from several structures of different sizes and heights. The four main wings enclose a narrow atrium. The maiden building and the Catholic chapel on the ground floor of the former tower are slightly exposed. Inside, architectural styles from all building periods have been preserved. The cellar vaults in the basement are of medieval origin, the other floors have Gothic, lavishly profiled wooden ceilings and walls, such as in the large hall in the northeast wing and in the keep. On the first floor of the west wing there are rooms designed in the Renaissance style, such as the large entrance hall with twisted columns. Numerous rooms with baroque stucco ceilings have been preserved from the last construction phase. Source: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Str%C3%B6ssendorf/

Strössendorf Castle is a castle in the Altenkunstadt district of Strössendorf. It is inhabited all year round, owned by the von Seckendorff family and cannot be visited. The castle is listed as a protected monument by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation under the monument number D-4-78-111-81.[1] Due to archaeological findings in the area of the castle, which are related to the medieval core of the building, the complex as a whole also represents an archaeological monument with the number D-4-5833-0151.[1] To the southwest, the castle building ensemble is adjoined by the castle church of St. Katharina and the castle park with former stables. The moated castle, also known as the Lower Castle, was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century by Knight Thiemo de Suemen. The castle changed hands several times in the following centuries, including Duke Ernst I of Coburg. The destruction of the Thirty Years' War was used as an opportunity to renovate and expand the castle grounds. After the death of the last lord of Untersiemau, the castle threatened to fall into disrepair. Although the castle was built 700 years earlier, its current appearance only came about in the 20th century. Bodo Ebhard, the restorer of Veste Coburg, was responsible for giving the moated castle a completely new facade in the historicist style. The castle is privately owned and can therefore only be admired from the outside. Source: https://www.coburg-rennsteig.de/poi/wasserschloss-untersiemau-mit-schlosspark

Unfortunately private and not open to visitors. Built late, between 1862 and 1864 in the English Tudor style, it is still inhabited today by the Barons von Künsberg family.
