In 1969, the then lord of the castle, Alram Graf zu Ortenburg, created a 50-hectare wildlife park in the English landscape garden created in the 19th century. The park was officially opened on May 16, 1970.

The town is located in the oldest prehistoric settlement area in the Main Valley. In a very small area, there is continuous evidence of settlement, which stretches from the Paleolithic period through the Hallstatt period to the Carolingian period. The name of the town was already borne by the fortress built around the year 1000 on a hill, a "light rock", and destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525. Duke Otto I of Andechs-Merania had his market town of Lichtenfels fortified in 1231, which can probably be interpreted as an indication that town rights had already been granted. A place on the Main and centrally located on old streets was deliberately chosen for the founding of Lichtenfels. Directly in front of the Rotenhan ruins there are two nice rest areas.

The Rotenhan castle ruins are one of the few genuine rock castles in Germany and the ancestral home of the important Rotenhan noble family. The ruins are one of Bavaria's most beautiful and impressive geotopes and are freely accessible.

The southern castle with its impressive residential tower was built between 1330 and 1350. Tours of parts of the inhabited complex are only possible by appointment. The legendary Lichtenstein ruins are among the most beautiful in the region and are freely accessible. Around 20 panels and display cases provide valuable information about the castle.
