Barlach's sculptures and paintings are exhibited in the bright exhibition building and in Barlach's studio house; the exhibition building currently has works on the theme of "movement": "Avenger", "Wanderer" and "Dancing Old Man". In the studio house there are impressive designs for World War I memorials, including the Hamburg and Magdeburg memorials, the two sculptures with which Barlach had his breakthrough, the figures of the Beethoven memorial and pictures of him. Ernst Barlach: Born in 1870, raised in the Hamburg area and in Mecklenburg, Barlach studied art and did this and that; was unsuccessful for a long time until he traveled to Russia at the age of 36 and brought inspiration and ideas from there/from the folk art there. Since then, Barlach has created down-to-earth, authentic, earth-rooted, often clunky figures and was successful with them. At 40 he went to Güstrow, at 56 he had his studio house built, and died at the age of 68. Highly recommended, Güstrow and its two Barlach museums.

8月 15, 2024, Mühlbach in Güstrow
The canal flows from the Inselsee towards Güstrow. From the weir next to the fisherman's house near the road bridge it becomes the Mühlbach. It then flows past the former mill to the castle moat, then continues as a town moat to the rose garden and flows into the Nebel there!

6月 28, 2024, Güstrow Market Square
The historic Güstrow market in Güstrow in the old town is the center of the city. The square was named after the medieval market square on which the town hall and the parish church of St. Mary are located in the center. In 1978 the market was redesigned and the Archimedes sculpture was erected. From 1991 onwards, the historic old town was renovated as a former national area monument and now a model city for urban development, as were the square (2020) and many houses. 6月 28, 2024, Schloss Güstrow
Güstrow Castle is one of the most important Renaissance castles in northern Europe. It combines Italian and French architectural elements with a typically northern European basic structure in a fascinating way. The castle's special jewel can be admired in its ballroom. A lively red deer frieze from the time it was built, which was created for Duke Ulrich in 1570, has been preserved here. Deer and hinds frolic here, jumping or grazing peacefully together. They are considered a symbol of a good royal marriage, so that the deer frieze refers to the paired name cartouches above, which show Duke Ulrich's noble ancestors. 6月 28, 2024, Güstrow Town Hall
The town hall of Güstrow is a successor to the first town hall, which was built in the 13th century. The current seat of the Güstrow city administration was inaugurated in 1798 and is located in the center of the Mecklenburg town, right in the town center. The Gothic parish church of St. Mary is in the immediate vicinity. Source: Wikipedia

6月 28, 2024, Borwin Fountain (Borwinbrunnen)
In front of the post office stands the Borwin fountain with the statue of Heinrich Borwin II (1170-1226), Prince of Mecklenburg, Lord of Rostock and founder of the city of Güstrow. The crowning figure in the middle of the fountain was created in 1889 by the sculptor Richard Thiele from Hamburg, one of Ernst Barlach's teachers. The hexagonal sandstone fountain was designed by Georg Daniel from Schwerin. Source:https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postamt_G%C3%BCstrow

6月 28, 2024, Dom zu Güstrow
Güstrow Cathedral is part of the North German brick Gothic style and has a rich interior from the late Romanesque period to the modern era, including Ernst Barlach's Floating Man. It is spread out on the southern edge of the city and exudes a great sense of calm. The cathedral square is a special ensemble in the city. Here is the oldest school in Mecklenburg, the former court of Wallenstein, and within sight we find the Renaissance castle. The cathedral was founded in 1226 and consecrated in 1335. In 1568 it became the Protestant court church and burial place for the Güstrow royal family until 1695, when the Güstrow line died out. The cathedral was last renovated in the spirit of neo-Gothic from 1865 to 1868. Source: https://dom-guestrow.de/geschichte.html

6月 28, 2024, Imperial Post Office Güstrow
In 1896, the two-storey, historicizing Imperial Post Office was completed according to plans by Hubert. The main entrance is located in the corner of the building in the tower. Three gable projections structure the building. The four-storey, urbanistically dominant tower with a bay window, the surrounding balcony in the open upper level and the octagonal onion-shaped helmet with the lantern and the weather vane was renovated in 1956 and given a slate covering. After slate panels came loose and fell to the ground, the tower helmet had to be secured and renovated in 1984; it was now given a copper covering. In 1995, the helmet was renovated again, being removed and reinstalled using a special crane. Until 1929, the telegraph and telephone lines were routed into the building via the tower. The "Floating Angel" (also known as "The Floating One") seen here in Güstrow Cathedral, a famous work of art by Ernst Barlach (1870 to 1938), can also be admired in the Rhineland, in the Antoniterkirche in Cologne. See https://www.komoot.de/highlight/3597904
