Lake Bordesholm is a popular local recreation area. A well-maintained path, around 7 km long, runs mostly along the shore of the 70 hectare lake and is ideal for walking, jogging or cycling. On the west bank is the huge monastery church, which is reminiscent of the former Bordesholm monastery.

With only 2.41 ha of small willow thicket and reed wilderness, the core of today's nature reserve (NSG) "West shore of Lake Einfeld" was placed under protection by decree on January 24, 1955 as a "bird sanctuary at Lake Einfeld". The primary protection goal was to create an undisturbed reserve for bird life. Due to the progressive silting up of the lake, the topography of the nature reserve soon no longer corresponded to its registered borders. However, it was to take more than ten years before the NSG was finally enlarged to around 13 ha by decree of November 12, 1987. At the same time, the protection goal was expanded to include a sustainable safeguarding of the near-natural shore landscape with various silting-up zones and an open water surface. The nature reserve for NABU Schleswig-Holstein has been looked after by NABU Neumünster from the start.

The Einfelder See is located in the north of Neumünster between the Einfeld district and the village of Mühbrook. It was formed as a subglacial drainage valley during the Vistula Ice Age. Since there are no tributaries to the lake worth mentioning, it is fed by groundwater and precipitation. It owes its scenic charm to the border location between the natural areas of the Eastern Hill Country and the Holstein Vorgeest. While the beginnings of the varied landscape of the eastern hill country can be seen when looking towards the northeast, the flat plain of the Vorgeest extends to the south. A larger forest in the west of the lake, the Bondenholz, and the Kistenmoor in the east enrich the area with additional scenic elements. Part of the western bank is protected.
