The short walk to the observation tower is absolutely worthwhile.

Brilliant mountain views. Tricky rocky terrain. Steep & narrow path. Perfect for a mountain bike.

Is this a mountain bike highlight or just another Fahrrad Tour taking pictures? I do sarcasm by the way.

After years without any visible progress, a successful exhibition facility was built in 2015 and 2016 in the heart of Schenkenberg on the site of the former telegraph station, a lasting landmark for the entire town. Indispensable for this were the highly dedicated instigator Wolfgang Groch and a large number of selfless volunteers who lent their hands intensively and donated substantial sums of money.

Beyond Deetz, where the cycle path winds through fields like a carefree thought, lies a small swimming spot. The sand is soft, the water shallow and clear, the willows hang low, as if they were listening. And anyone who goes into the water—or simply looks in—sees her lying there: "Fat Elke." A houseboat? An art installation? A wink at the village life? No matter. Elke lies there, painted, inscribed, sedately beautiful. She's not a yacht, not a designer piece, but a floating living room with a sense of humor. People sometimes sit on the jetty in front of it, drinking coffee or beer, playing guitar, or simply passing the time. The Havel gurgles gently, dragonflies buzz, a dog barks somewhere. This place doesn't take anything seriously—and perhaps that's exactly why it's the perfect place. Anyone who takes a break here quickly realizes: Even the most beautiful cycle path can end sometimes—as long as Elke is in sight.

The Havel Cycle Path isn't a cycle path. It's a promise. To open spaces. To light. To slowness. Those who entrust themselves to it between Schmergow and Deetz are served a picture-perfect slice of Brandenburg: smooth as a board, empty as a promise, beautiful as a Sunday. To the right, Lake Trebelsee glitters, to the left, horses stretch out on lush green pastures. In between, you glide along on a finely paved path – so straight, so serene that even your thoughts eventually start rolling. Every now and then, a rider, a herd of goats, or a boat on the Havel. Everything seems to be moving, but nothing is in a hurry. If you want, you can stop. There are plenty of reasons: viewpoints, rest areas, swimming spots. Or the small café in Schmergow, where the ice cream tastes of forest and summer, and the potato soup tastes like home. And if you run out of courage or the desire, the train station in Groß Kreutz or Götz is less than ten minutes away. But most of the time, you don't want to leave. Because it's quiet here. And peaceful. And beautiful. And because you know: the next sunset over the Havel is sure to come.

And then that moment, which only happens on bike tours: When you dismount, not because you have to, but because you want to. Because a place stands in your way that doesn't call loudly, but quietly beckons. Like here, on the banks of the Havel near Paretz, where the water draws time in wide loops. A few boats lie crookedly in the sun, "Fat Elke" stretches charmingly and self-deprecatingly on the jetty, as if she's already seen the world – and approved. An old barge patiently rusts away, while on the bank, a woman with bare feet reads a book, as if there were no algorithm to remind her to do something. The Havel River shimmers flat and flowing, a stage for deceleration, framed by willows that don't resist the wind, but accompany it. If you want, you can swim here. If you don't want to, you can just watch. Both are fine. And when the sun slowly sets, the sand crunches beneath your tires, and the first Radler clinks from your luggage, you know: This is exactly why you're doing it. Not for the miles. For a moment of reflection on life.
