The Westensee Nature Park lies between Kiel, Rendsburg, and Neumünster. Nestled amidst the region's typical hedgerow landscape, you'll find babbling brooks, tranquil lakes, refreshing forests, and expansive meadows. The Kirchbarkau - Preetz - Lütjenburg (KPL) narrow-gauge railway, founded in 1908, connected rural towns in the region from 1910 onwards over a distance of 41.1 kilometres with 23 stops and was used primarily for freight transport, for example for agricultural products. Despite good infrastructure and regular transport, it was not economically viable, so passenger transport was initially discontinued and then all operations were discontinued in 1938. The line was dismantled, but relics such as the Schwentine Bridge remind us of this short but significant era in regional transport history.

Westensee Nature Park The Westensee Nature Park is located in the particularly charming Holstein landscape, with its rolling hills, in the triangle formed by Kiel, Rendsburg, and Neumünster. Amidst this magnificent natural setting, in a typical Holstein landscape, you'll find babbling streams and rivers, tranquil lakes, refreshing forests, green meadows, and small fields. This mosaic of small landscapes is ideal for individual experiences.

The landscape conservation area is located in the north of the Altmark district of Salzwedel and includes the Arendsee as well as parts of the forest and grassland areas to the north. The villages of Arendsee, Genzien, Zießau and Ziemendorf are affected by the landscape conservation area.

The Westensee (elevation 6 m above sea level) is located in the Achterwehr district in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. It is the fifth largest lake in Schleswig-Holstein and is characterized as a lime-rich lowland lake with a relatively large catchment area without pronounced temperature stratification. With its location between the cities of Kiel and Rendsburg, it forms the center of the Westensee Nature Park. It drains into Schleswig-Holstein's largest river, the Eider, and also reaches the Kiel Canal via the Achterwehr shipping canal.

Violets, larkspur and winter horsetail accompany you on your way through the beautiful Ahrensee nature reserve. A route of around 6 km takes you over partially damp meadow and forest paths through the spring-green Eider lowlands to the picturesque Ahrensee.
