The Kiel Canal is a 98 km long artificial waterway, the construction of which not only cut through landscapes, forests, and fields, but sometimes also through villages and existing country roads. The major roads and railways were connected by gigantic bridges, while the smaller ones are "spanned" by ferries. A total of 14 ferries operate along the canal, transporting cars, bicycles, and pedestrians from one bank to the other day and night, free of charge by imperial decree.
