In 1903, a mountain hut belonging to the Erzgebirge Association on the summit of Bärenstein formed the nucleus of today's guesthouse and hotel with an observation tower. Ten years later, the hut was expanded into a lodging house. After reunification, the mountain house, now run again as a family business, was reconstructed and reopened in 1992, and renovated again in 2021. The mountain hotel, located at an altitude of 898 meters, offers 22 rustic rooms and, as a special attraction, a 27-meter-high observation tower. On September 11, 1944, the tower was damaged during the air battle over the Ore Mountains ("Black Monday"). Bullet holes can still be seen in the spiral staircase.

It is worth climbing the rocks. This activity is not difficult and there is a beautiful view from there.

Shelter at the Gypsy Rock

The Markus Röhling mining smithy, the hut house and the horse sledge at the Markus Röhling Treibeschacht are in an idyllic location directly on the mining trail. The hut house was first built on this site in 1768. The mining smithy was built in 1773 and was expanded in 1785 with a horse sledge. In 1857 the mine was closed down and the horse sledge was later demolished. The area has been run by the “Markus Röhling Treibeschacht” association since 1999. Hikers and day tourists can enjoy a good drink and a meal on weekends (during the week by appointment) and visit the horse sledge newly built in 2000 and exhibitions.

The almost closed shelters here are a good thing, especially in winter.

The perfect overnight stay on the ridge path because of the evening and morning atmosphere. When the weather is nice, you have a wonderful view of what you have hiked and what is to come. Nice rooms and good cuisine at moderate prices.
