Very demanding climb/Spectacular descent

Uricani (obsolete Uricani-Hobițeni, Uricani-Hobiceni; Hungarian Urikány or Hobicaurikány, German Goldenbach)[3] is a small town in Hunedoara County in Romania. Uricani is a relatively late settlement that has probably existed since the end of the 18th century. It was first mentioned in documents in 1786 under the name Uricani-Hobiceni (Hungarian Hobiczény és Felső Urikány). The first settlers were Romanians, came from the villages of Hobița and Uric in the Hațeg area and named the new settlement after their hometowns. At first, forestry and livestock farming were the most important industries. Soon, however, mining of hard coal and lignite played the main role.[4] In 1857, a coking plant was put into operation.[5] The rapid economic development led to a rapid increase in population. As a result of the First World War, the town passed from Austria-Hungary to Romania and was officially named Uricani. After the Second World War, coal mining was intensified again. In 1965, Uricani was granted town status.[4] The economic upheaval after the revolution in 1989 led to the closure of some of the coal mines and left many miners unemployed.

The Transalpina, also known as Drum național 67C (Romanian for "National Road 67C", DN67C for short), is a touristically important road in Romania. It crosses the Transylvanian Alps, connects the Gorj County in Little Wallachia (Oltenia) with the Alba County in Transylvania and reaches a height of 2132 m,[2] according to other information 2145 m.[3] Its summit height thus exceeds that of the Transfagarasan High Road (Drum național; DN 7C). The modern road, also known as Drumul Regal ("King's Road"), was opened in 1939 and expanded for strategic reasons during the Second World War. During the revolutionary period around 1989, the road was neglected. From 2009, it was partially asphalted and in 2010, a section was put back into operation. The asphalting was completed in 2012.[3] Currently (2016) the road is fully accessible with restrictions.

If you want to ride the entire Transalpina, then this is the place to gather strength for the following climb. Here you can get something to eat and drink. If you want, you can also camp here.

It's definitely worth taking a break here. In addition to good food and souvenirs, you also have a beautiful view here. However, there is often a lot going on here, especially on weekends when the weather is nice.

Regardless of whether you come from Sebeș or from Novaci, you already have a few meters of altitude in your legs when you arrive here. It is definitely worth taking a break here and taking in this incredible view. By the way, there are a few snack bars where you can still eat solid food. However, these were no longer open at the beginning of October.

The Transalpina is the highest paved road in Romania and this is its pinnacle. Just fantastic.

Good starting point for a hike to Parangul Mare (one of the highest mountains in Romania) or the surrounding peaks and Lacul Galcescu.
