The ruins of Bramberg Castle are located within the Haßberge Nature Park on the summit of the 494.3-meter-high Bramberg, an extinct volcanic cone of the Heldburg Gangschar, approximately 2 kilometers northwest of the village of Bramberg, a western district of Ebern, and about 5 kilometers (as the crow flies) northeast of the city of Königsberg in Bavaria. The farms first documented in the 14th century belonged to the nearby Zabelstein Castle complex. However, agricultural conditions on the ridge were not favorable, and the farms were abandoned around 1840. Remains include the preserved cistern, the dried-up village pond, and some remains of walls. The fields and meadows are now all overgrown with forests.

At just under 20 meters, the Zabelstein observation tower isn't all that tall, but its gratings in the floor and on the balustrade create a somehow incredibly airy feeling. The view is fantastic. Even if you can't see the Main River itself, you still have a wonderful view of the Main Valley. On a clear day, the Thuringian Forest, the Gramschatz Forest, and Franconian Switzerland can be seen on the horizon. The tower is the great-grandchild of the first observation tower on Zabelstein. The first tower (1956-1978) resembled a 15-meter-high hunter's lodge. The second (1978-1999) and third towers (1999-2019) were also made of wood. The new tower, erected in 2020, is the aforementioned grating structure, framed by wooden struts that widen outwards.

We briefly left the main hiking trail HAS.5 and walked up a wide path, which was initially paved and then turned into a wide forest path, also a little steeply up to the plateau of the Hohe Wann. This path was also used by forest vehicles. I visited here in winter, so I could look into the valley through the still leafless trees. There are benches here for a rest. I had previously read on the Highlight Trail that it is very dangerous, also because of falling trees. That's why I chose the wide path and walked back along it.
