Marienkapelle Würzburg The Marienkapelle - an architectural masterpiece in Lower Franconia The Marienkapelle on the market square in Würzburg is one of the most beautiful and popular churches in the city. In Lower Franconia, the building is a highlight of the late Gothic era. Despite the size of the building, as the name suggests, the "Marienkapelle" is only a chapel and not a church, as it was not granted parish rights. This was because the chapel was built against the wishes of the Prince-Bishop. Special features of the architecture The Marienkapelle in Würzburg has three portals with tympanums. Each tympanum (or decorative surface) depicts a different scene. The south portal is best known for the sandstone figures of Adam and Eve. However, these are only copies of the actual figures by Tilman Riemenschneider. The original figures can be viewed in the Mainfränkisches Museum. The west portal also features a decorative panel depicting the Last Judgment. The Marienkapelle on the north side of the Würzburg market square is now a subsidiary church of the cathedral and Neumünster parishes owned by the Marienkapellenstiftung. In earlier times, however, it was the crystallization point of urban commitment against the dominance of bishops, foundations and monasteries. Picturesquely nestled and located between the vineyards on the Main loop, you can wonderfully drive along the Main, stop off and enjoy the wine. There are great meals at Gasthaus Mainblick. The inn in the center of the town is currently closed.

The idyllic little wine village is worth exploring in detail.

On the sign of the Marienkapelle it is written: Built on the site of a synagogue, which was destroyed in 1548 along with the Jewish quarter, between 1377 and 1480 by the citizens.
