Marienkapelle Würzburg The Marienkapelle - an architectural masterpiece in Lower Franconia The Marienkapelle on the market square in Würzburg is one of the most beautiful and popular churches in the city. In Lower Franconia, the building is a highlight of the late Gothic era. Despite the size of the building, as the name suggests, the "Marienkapelle" is only a chapel and not a church, as it was not granted parish rights. This was because the chapel was built against the wishes of the Prince-Bishop. Special features of the architecture The Marienkapelle in Würzburg has three portals with tympanums. Each tympanum (or decorative surface) depicts a different scene. The south portal is best known for the sandstone figures of Adam and Eve. However, these are only copies of the actual figures by Tilman Riemenschneider. The original figures can be viewed in the Mainfränkisches Museum. The west portal also features a decorative panel depicting the Last Judgment.
