The fortress was built on a mountain tongue on the left side of the Main about 100 meters above the river. The west side is the only flat side of the mountain. On the north side are the gardens and allotments that were created in the course of the State Horticultural Show in 1990. The other two mountain slopes are vineyards. The small slope on the eastern flank of the castle is the Schlossberg, on the southern flank the Inner Bar. Great photo opportunities and views of the city.

It's worth the hike. The fortress itself is a beautiful large complex with gardens, a restaurant and history. The view from the fortress over Würzburg is just as beautiful as the view over to the Käppele. This side trip is well worth it.

A surprisingly spacious complex that convinces with its fortified buildings and the view of the surrounding area. Should not be left out when visiting Würzburg.

The Marienberg Fortress is just a stone's throw from the city center on the left bank of the Main. It is surrounded by vines and looks down on the old university town with its domes, towers and bridges. Original Fliehburg of the Hallstatt period (around 1000 BC)
Fortress Marienberg, with its rich historical past and proud appearance, is one of the most impressive architectural monuments of ancient times. Three millennia will tell the story of the mountain festivals. Already around 1000 BC There was a Celtic refuge on the site of today's fortress. The core of the later castle complex is the St. Mary's Church, consecrated in 706, the earliest sacred building east of the Rhine. The castle was founded in 1201 (the keep dates from this period) and from 1253 to 1719 it was the residence of the Würzburg prince-bishops.

            Imposing fortress above Würzburg. 🙂
In the early 8th century, Marienberg, which has been inhabited since the late Bronze Age, was probably home to a fort of the Franconian-Thuringian dukes with a church, which was raised in 741 to become the first Würzburg bishop's church. From 1200 an unusually large castle was built, which was expanded and expanded in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.
The storming of the castle by the Swedes in 1631 in the Thirty Years' War prompted Johann Philipp von Schönborn to surround the Marienberg with a ring of mighty bastions, which significantly characterize the appearance of the castle. In 1945 the fortress burned down almost completely, and reconstruction lasted until 1990.
The Marienkirche, whose origins go back to the year 706 AD, the 40 m high keep and the well house with the over 100 m deep cistern are impressive testimonies to the more than 1000-year history of the Marienberg Fortress.
The 1,300 square meter princely garden, which was restored in 1937/38 according to plans from the early 18th century, is accessible from the castle courtyard.

The fortresses have been redeveloped over the years, and the whole complex with the extensive parks is fantastically beautiful 😇

The fortress Marienberg is located above Würzburg in Lower Franconia. The fortress was built on a ledge on the left side of the Main about 100 meters above the river. The west side is the only flat side of the mountain. On the north side are the gardens and allotments that were created in the course of the State Garden Show in 1990. The other two hillsides are vineyards. The small slope on the eastern flank of the castle is the Schlossberg, on the southern flank the inner ledge.

Already in the late Bronze Age (urn field culture) and the early Iron Age (Hallstatt period) were probably fortified settlements here. After the migration of peoples, the Franks came in the 6th century. At the beginning of the 8th century, the Marienkirche, the oldest church in Würzburg, was built, in which initially the Würzburg bishops were buried, as evidenced by the grave slabs. Below the fortress to the Main there is the oldest church of the city in the valley, St. Burkard.

The fortress has been rebuilt several times throughout history. The oldest surviving parts are from 704 (little Marienkirche).

Around 1200, a castle with a keep and a deep well was built, the palace of Konrad von Querfurt. From 1253 to 1719, the fortress Marienberg was the residence of the Würzburg prince-bishops.

The prince's garden is accessible from the castle courtyard. Here visitors can enjoy the fantastic all-round view from the Steinberg in the north via Würzburg and the Main Valley to Käppele.

Large fortress on the left side of the Main. A hike up through vineyards is worthwhile, but the fortress can also be easily reached by car. Photo motifs are the inner courtyard, the view of the Käppele and of course the view of Würzburg.
