Well, in late summer 2025, the ice completely melted. According to the locals, last winter was much too warm. So, you could hike much further through the gorge—although we came across a large, slippery rock that we didn't want to descend without a rope.

In the middle of the tents of the "flying" traders, in the middle of street food stalls and "all sorts, made in China": the BALINGIIN TSERENDORJ STATUE. The monument commemorates the 130th anniversary of Prime Minister Balinglin Terendor (1869-1928), the statue was designed by B.Khilmori in 1999. Terendor was known as the "diligent minister in the country, having served as Prime Minister of Mongolia for four years (1924-1928). Prior to this position, he was Foreign Minister in the Bogd Khaan government.

Always a fun and busy hustle and bustle on Democracy Square: Parents take their little ones to the numerous attractions in the amusement park. Children circle around the column with their motor scooters or mini jeeps, which still reminds of old times, like several buildings in the area: The former Lenin Museum and the communist party headquarters were located on Democracy Square.

The hotel is located on busy Seoul Street, directly across from the Mongolian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Appropriate, simple accommodation, very centrally located and ideal for the start or end (after arrival 🛬 and before departure 🛫) of a trip 🧳 through Mongolia 🇲🇳. Personal recommendation: Do not leave valuables in the hotel.

Not so often mentioned in travel guides: the dictator Choibalsan had himself worshiped here, almost as a copy of the Lenin mausoleum from 1954 - 2005: his ashes were kept here in an urn. The democratic awakening for Mongolia also began on the square in 1990 🇲🇳. Hunger strikes took place which contributed to the collapse of the regime and ended socialist rule.

The monument to the Mongol Empire of Kharkhorin (Karakorum) is located high on a hill, visible from afar and illuminated at night, east of the city, on the outskirts. From here you have a great view of the Orkhon Valley.
