The Kahlenberg Chapel is a small pilgrimage chapel located above Ringsheim and Ettenheim in the Ortenau district. It was built in the 17th century (after the Thirty Years' War) and is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. Formerly an important pilgrimage site, it is still used for religious services and processions. The chapel is idyllically situated in the vineyards on the Kahlenberg hill and offers a beautiful view across the Rhine plain.

We've wanted to stop there many times, but it was always closed. This year (2025) they're open until November 2nd. There were probably 100 people inside, but there are also countless beer tables and benches outside. At first I thought it might take a while, but the drinks arrived in 2 minutes, the food in 10 minutes, incredibly well organized, and the schnitzel, super deliciously fried, with a choice of sauce and fried potatoes, was simply unbelievably good 😋

A wine trail leads around the Heuberg observation tower, where you can learn more about the grape varieties. Around 80 different types are cultivated here. You can read more about them on the information boards – including a magnificent view of the vineyards!

Here you can indulge in the best regional delicacies: The menu includes tarte flambée, sausage salad, and Maultaschen (swabian ravioli). Events are regularly held at the Strauße; you can find the calendar on the website: https://www.hummels-strausse.de/index.html.

The beautifully situated chapel is said to have been built around 1650/60 after the Thirty Years' War by a devout Ettenheimer to fulfill a vow. The chapel has been expanded several times, most recently adding the porch with basket arches in 1954. The chapel is a great place for a break on your hike.

Here you reach the first elevation on a beautiful trail, actually a downhill route from the bikers from Ettenheimmünster, from here on it continues at a moderate level.
