The castle is nestled in the middle of meadows. At the end of a beautiful chestnut avenue, you can take a pleasant rest by well-kept, small ponds.

The castle and the surrounding small streets are really worth seeing and a must when visiting Stolberg.

At the end of an avenue of chestnut trees there is a large, fortified square courtyard with two round towers to the north and west. In the 16th century, Knoppenburg was known as "Hof op der Heyde" and was probably separated from the Belven estate at this time. It then belonged to Bertolf von Belven and his descendants. In 1615, the castle was bought by the Vischer family, who built further buildings on the castle that no longer exist today. At the beginning of the 18th century, Knoppenburg passed into the hands of Lambert Xavier Lamberts, intendant of the province of Limburg. At the end of the 18th century, the new owners, the de la Saulx family, built new residential buildings and made changes to the facades of the farm buildings and towers. During the French period, Ignaz Joseph de la Saulx was, among other things, chairman of the Malmedy city administration and president of the Apellhof court in Cologne. Above the entrance door to the residential wing is a shield with the coat of arms of the de la Saulx family. The family's coat of arms can also be found on the roof, incorporated into weather vanes. The Knoppenburg was rebuilt in 1998. Source: Info Tourismus Raeren

Small winding streets with houses made of local limestone and carved bluestone on doors, windows and wall edges look back at you as you walk through the old town of Stolberg. As you stroll, you take your time to look at the traditional house facades and notice that despite the old town's long history of development and the influence of the industrial era, a homogeneous appearance has emerged. You walk through Burgstrasse, Schartstrasse, Klatterstrasse and Enkereistrasse, which were the main streets until the end of the 19th century. When you arrive on Klatterstrasse you stand in front of the oldest surviving half-timbered house from 1529. Next to it is the house number 12 from the 18th century, which used to be a brewery. In his basement there was a pond (moat) from the weir that cooled the beer. Your walk finally ends at the castle rock and shows you Stolberg's landmark, the defiant medieval castle from the 12th century. It towers over the old town of Stolberg on a limestone cliff and looks back on 500 years of building history. You can visit the castle on a guided tour that lasts around 1.5 hours and get a better picture of the building and its history. Last but not least, take a look at the copper yards in the valley axis near the Vichtbach. The early modern courtyards are another character feature of the city. But you won't come across any uniform buildings, but rather look at very individual courtyards. In the pre-industrial residential and commercial complexes there are copper yards that resemble palaces or are reminiscent of simple craft workshops. You should have enough time to visit the old town, the castle and the copper yards so that you can see everything in a relaxed manner. Source: https://www.eifel.info/a-historical-altstadtkern

The tower on Rahmenberg hill above the market square is one of the city's most striking landmarks. The ruins can be reached in just a few minutes via a footpath leading to the "Half Moon," another viewpoint along the way. The Haller tower is commonly referred to as the castle's observation post because it offered a much better view of the Rur Valley. Other sources consider it an outer bailey protecting Reichenstein Abbey. Even in a drawing from 1543, it is depicted as a roofed, imposing tower. In 1570, its stones were used to repair the castle. Typically, the hilltop castle belongs to the category of early tower castles, which consisted of a massive residential and defensive tower. The tower stands atop a steeply sloping rock face. A thick wall on three sides completes the defensive design. The walls are up to 2.5 meters thick. It is assumed that the tower base was hewn out of the rock, as the eastern and northern bases have no edges. Source: https://www.eifel.info/a-haller-ruine

Stolberg's Old Town is one of the historic town centers of North Rhine-Westphalia and part of Oberstolberg in the copper town of Stolberg in the Aachen metropolitan region. The old town dates back to the city's origins and, together with Stolberg Castle, forms Stolberg's historic town center. The oldest streets and alleys are located near the castle. Several half-timbered houses in the late Gothic style have been preserved; the area is dominated by historic quarry stone houses made of dolomite limestone, whose window and door frames, corner blocks, and other supporting and decorative elements are made of bluestone. Over 100 buildings are listed as historical monuments, and numerous sculptures can be found here. Stolberg's oldest copper courtyards are also located here. The castle stands on a limestone rock. It dates back to the 15th century; a predecessor building dates back to the 12th century.
