In the 16th century, the Knoppenburg was known as the "Hof op der Heyde" and was probably also separated from Gut Belven at this time. It then belonged to Bertolf von Belven and his descendants. In 1615 the castle was bought by the Vischer family, who built other buildings on the castle that no longer exist today. At the beginning of the 18th century, Knoppenburg passed into the hands of Lambert Xavier Lambert, intendant of the province of Limburg. At the end of the 18th century, a new dwelling was built by the new owners, the de la Saulx family, and changes were made to the facades of the service wings and the towers. During the French period, Ignaz Joseph de la Saulx was, among other things, chairman of the Malmedy city administration and court president of the Apellhof in Cologne. Above the entrance door of the residential wing is a coat of arms with the coat of arms of the de la Saulx family. The family coat of arms can also be found on the roof, incorporated into weathervanes.
