1662年にヴィッテルスバッハ家のバイエルン選帝侯マクシミリアン2世エマヌエルが誕生したことがきっかけとなり、若い母である選帝侯妃ヘンリエッテ・アデライデ・オブ・サヴォイアへの贈り物として、ノイハウゼンとオーバーメンツィングの間の地域に城と庭園を建設することになりました。「シュヴァイクバウ・ツー・ニンフェンブルク」の起工式は1664年に行われました。この施設は、イタリアの田園別荘風の宮殿として構想されていました。夏の離宮であり、ミュンヘン王宮である政府所在地に代わるものとして、バロック様式の城として整備されたのは、マックス・エマヌエルが統治する一世代後のことでした。ニンフェンブルクの模範となったのは、ピエモンテの狩猟用シャトー、ラ・ヴェナリアであり、その建築家アメデオ・カステッラモンテ（1613年から1683年）がニンフェンブルクの最初の設計も手がけました。
