Kühkopf is always worth a tour

Nature reserve, peace, fresh air.

The Kühkopf - the European bird reserve on the Rhine Today's Kühkopf was originally an inland peninsula near Guntersblum, with Rhine islands to the east, north and south. In the course of the straightening of the Rhine (1828/1829), a straightening breakthrough was made to the west of the peninsula and the area was completely separated from the mainland on the left bank of the Rhine, making the peninsula a river island. The Rhine islands that used to be in front of the peninsula now have a connection to the rest of the section due to silting up. The former main course of the Rhine is now an old bend in the Rhine. The almost undeveloped Kühkopf today forms the nature reserve "Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue" together with the Knoblochsaue to the north and some smaller islets in the Old Rhine. The Kühkopf alone accounts for around 1,700 hectares of the 2,440-hectare nature reserve. The island can be reached via two bridges.

The bridge built in 1978 over the Erfeld Altrhein has had a new name since last Sunday (10th). At a ceremony at the gate to the Kühkopf, Mayor Gerald Kummer unveiled a sign in front of around 150 guests, which now refers to the bridge as the "Martin Roth Bridge". Despite the almost wintry weather, many people from Erfeld came to the bridge to be part of the event. In his speech, Mayor Kummer explained the political career of his predecessor, Martin Roth. From May 1952 to March 1960 he was an honorary deputy member of the Erfeld municipal board. After his election as mayor, Roth served in that role for over sixteen years. Even after the Hessian regional reform and the merger to form the municipality of Riedstadt, Martin Roth continued to contribute his many years of experience to local politics. During the difficult phase of the transition from the five districts to the community as a whole, he was also a deputy on the Riedstadt community board from 1977 to 1981.
