To say the road itself isn't very pleasant to cycle on is a very, very, very mild way of putting it. For me, it was the worst section of the entire R1 EuroVelo route I'd cycled so far! But the castle and its grounds were truly impressive.

Bernburg (Saale) is the district town of the Salzlandkreis in the middle of Saxony-Anhalt. Bernburg is located on the Saale about 40 kilometers south of Magdeburg and 35 kilometers north of Halle (Saale). Bernburg is historically part of Anhalt and was the residence of the Ascanian branch line Anhalt-Bernburg.

The baroque building of the castle church of St. Aegidien is one of the most striking buildings in the city of Bernburg (Saale). At the same time, the parts of the Romanesque predecessor church that are still visible on the outside - the crossing tower and the apse used as a princely crypt - are a reminder of perhaps 1,000 years of building, church and community history on this site. The building was constructed in 1895 in the neo-renaissance style as the administrative building of the savings bank. The facade of the building is richly decorated. A high tower crowned by a lantern makes the building a very striking one.
