As Mr. Matschke von Maikowski described in his speech, the German Focke-Wulf pilot engaged in a dogfight with a (twin-engine) Lockheed P-38 "Lightning" in which both aircraft received such heavy hits that both crashed: The German pilot in the Rotter Forst and the American pilot near Hochstätt. As is usual with soldiers' graves, the memorial cross was made of round white birch wood. Since birch wood is not durable, it had to be replaced again this year. The deep impact crater directly behind the cross is particularly impressive.

12月 3, 2022, Gedenkkreuz "Fliegerkreuz" - Georg Reppel
On July 19, 1944, a dogfight took place over the Rotter Forest between a German "Focke-Wulf 190 A8" fighter plane and an American P-38 "Lightning" interceptor. The German came from Jagdgeschwader 300, stationed in Holzkirchen. Eventually both machines crashed. The German pilot, Sergeant Georg Reppel, was killed. A commemorative cross at the crash site, the so-called "Fliegerkreuz", commemorates the 24-year-old North Rhine-Westphalia. The former forester Wolfgang Matschke von Maikowski placed the birch cross here in 2009 to prevent this tragic event in World War II from being forgotten. It is in the Rotter Forest about 50 meters west of the "Max-Line" / "Nagelbrecher-Line" intersection. Every year there is a May prayer of the parish of Rott a. Inn instead.

The Rotter Forest, a holdover from the last Ice Age, contains a multitude of habitats for animals and plants. In the large forest we find several moor areas, including a nature reserve. The quiet duck pond in the north of the forest is a popular hiking destination. It can be easily reached on foot from Rott.
