Each of the summit crosses that hikers often encounter in the mountains, whether or not it depicts the body of the crucified Christ, invites passersby to a brief spiritual pause. Perhaps one or another will be able to encounter God here in a short prayer. As a prerequisite for a completely different mystical experience of encountering God, beyond such a small sacred monument, Hape Kerkeling, who made the pilgrimage on the Camino Francés in 2001, writes: “I am becoming freer here day by day (…) Through all the frequencies of emotion, I have slowly tuned myself into one frequency and had a wonderful reception. Total serene emptiness is the state that creates a vacuum which God can then calmly and completely fill.” (Hape Kerkeling in “I’m Off Then”)

It's not a spring in the traditional sense, but rather a headwaters area (slope, see photo), where the water converges on the clayey subsoil to the edge of the forest and then rises to the surface. This is where one of Bavaria's longest wild rivers begins its journey to its mouth in Lake Chiemsee in Schafwaschener Bay. A beautiful hiking trail leads from the source to the mouth.

A few steps before reaching the chapel, the hiker passes another small sacred monument: a crucifix, a cross depicting the crucified Christ. The chapel itself is dedicated to the Mother of God, who is venerated here under the title common in German-speaking countries: "Mary, Help of Christians" (Latin: "Sancta Maria, auxilium christianorum"). Throughout church history, but especially in popular piety, countless titles have been found for Mary with which believers have addressed her; see, for example, the invocations in the "Litany of Loreto."

Staudinger Kreuz (1240m): A gentle summit with a cross and a magnificent panorama. Less frequented than the Wandberg – ideal for a quiet break.
