Fühlinger See is not a single lake, but a large recreational area comprised of several interconnected artificial lakes in the north of Cologne-Fühlingen. Gravel was extracted here starting in 1912 for railway and road construction. The deep pits filled with groundwater due to the proximity of the Rhine. From 1967 onward, the area was recultivated and developed as a leisure and recreation area.

The 2,300-meter-long regatta course was inaugurated in 1978. At that time, there was little more here than a gravel pit with a field all around. The sports facility enhanced the region and within ten years the Fühlinger See recreation area with its seven sub-lakes was developed.

The 1998 World Rowing Championships on the 2,300-meter-long regatta course attracted international attention. The Fühlinger See is easily accessible by bike, public transport and car. Thanks to the many different opportunities to be active, it never gets boring there.
